DecisionCAMP 2025, held this past month, brought together decision intelligence technologists from leading organizations and practitioners from the decision management community, to discuss the latest advances in decision modeling, applications and considerations for generative AI and AI agents, and much more. You can find all the slides and recordings from the conference here.
Towards Hybrid AI Decision Automation
One of the common themes that emerged from the conference was that when it comes to decision automation, a hybrid AI approach is the most sensible one. Today, the term “AI” is synonymous with generative AI (GenAI) powered by LLMs. Early adopters have focused on developing AI agents to replace human decision-making. However, as Denis Gagné, CEO of Trisotech, warned in his “Harness GenAI and Agentic AI without Repeating Yesterday’s Flaws,” organizations risk repeating the same mistakes as previous AI waves. The result is brittle, ungovernable systems that fail under real-world pressure.
Pierre Feillet and team at IBM France argued that LLMs can only simulate reasoning in “Rational of Just Predictive? Comparing Reasoning in LLMs and Symbolic Systems for Automated Decisions.” Not only that, but our own CTO, Carlos Serrano-Morales, reminded the audience during the “Ask an Expert” panel that LLMs model language. And language is not the same as reality. However, LLMs are very good at convincing humans otherwise.
Therefore, a hybrid AI approach, which combines GenAI with more deterministic forms of AI (business rules and machine learning with fairness and explainability) provides the much needed guardrails to keep humans in the loop and build trust with end users.
Over the next few blog posts, we’ll take a deeper dive into this and other key insights from the conference, including practical applications of AI in decision management, limitations of LLMs, and how business analysts can best leverage GenAI.
